Consultant Oral Surgeon, Mr Cyrus Kerawala explains how there are over 600 minor salivary glands throughout the lips, mouth and throat along with six major salivary glands; the parotid, the submandibular and the sublingual. Any of these salivary glands can become blocked for a number of reasons, and although lemon juice might sometimes work surgery for the removal of stones may also be required.
In his authoritative article, Blocked Salivary Glands, Mr Kerawala goes on to explain the latest treatment options for treating salivary gland stones, how to prevent them and what is involved when surgery is required. The good news is he says, "Salivary gland stones are not more common amongst people living in hard water areas".
The swelling caused by blocked salivary glands can be intermittent and most commonly occurs in around eating, hence the term 'meal time syndrome'.
