Breast Cancer Awareness Month: chemo cookery

Chemotherapy can lead to a drastic change in the body resulting in fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and sickness. Jim Fisher, an English chef working in France, was inspired through his own mother’s battle with cancer to develop recipes to help people undergoing chemotherapy with the help of nutritional therapist, Lucy Hyland.

The advice varies from foods to combat inflammation to foods used in the repair and maintenance of the mouth stomach and gut. Jim found that the worst side effect of chemotherapy, in regards to taste and appetite, was oral mucositis which caused pain and inflammation within the mouth. He recommends using teas such as liquorice, chamomile and fennel to calm the lining of the mouth and to try to include these teas in as many ways as possible.

For advice on which foods are most easily digestible, which help to boost the immune system and which are generally intolerable during chemotherapy along with a list of tasty and healthy recipes please click here.
