Dr Simon Greenfield is a highly experienced gastroenterologist who practises in Hertfordshire. He treats the majority of conditions affecting the gut including all types of bowel problems, such as constipation and diarrhoea; all forms of indigestion; and problems with the pancreas/bile duct.
Dr Greenfield is Chairman of the Clinical Services and Standards Committee for the British Society of Gastroenterology - BSG.
He treats patients privately at the Spire Hospital Harpenden; the Capio Pinehill Hospital, Hitchin and the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Welwyn Garden City where he also treats NHS patients. He is also a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the NHS Lister Hospital, Stevenage.
Dr Greenfield has been a consultant since 1996 and sees over 1,500 patients anually for consultation at his large practice in Hertfordshire. This includes approximately 300 gastroscopy procedures, 250 colonoscopy procedures and 100 endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures every year. About 10-15% of these patients suffer with irritable bowel syndrome.
Personal treatment philosophy:
When meeting a new patient my philosophy is to take a detailed history of your problems and in particular to focus on any areas of diet that might be influencing your symptoms. If required I may undertake a gastroscopy/colonoscopy but I believe that this is only a small part of the treatment process and that it is important to take a holistic view when treating someone with gut symptoms. Apart from medication, dietary advice plays an important part of my treatment strategy. I am also keen that the patient is involved in the treatment plan and is offered choice in their treatment whenever possible.
