Prominent ears affect approximately 1% of the British population and can cause psychological distress, although they have no impact on hearing. Bat ears can be corrected in children or adults using surgery known as pinnaplasty or otoplasty which involves remodelling the cartilage in the ear to position it closer to the head. An alternative option for newborn babies is ear splinting to reshape the soft cartilage of the ears whilst they are still growing to prevent surgery when older. In this section two of the UK’s leading acknowledged experts explain the options and what is involved.
