Q: When should I consider tumour ablation as a treatment for kidney cancer?

Answer:

Ablation is suitable for you especially in the following situations:

  • If you don’t want to undergo full-scale surgery,
  • Have been deemed unfit or ‘high-risk’ for surgery,
  • You have a solitary kidney or poor renal function,
  • You have bilateral tumours (tumours in both kidneys),
  • You have a genetic predisposition towards multiple tumours.

In some cases, ablation can be an alternative to a ‘radical nephrectomy’ (the removal of the whole kidney.)
