Answer:
Lumps just under the ear often represent a lump in the parotid gland (salivary gland). Thankfully the majority of these are benign but may require a surgical intervention. These lumps however, require investigation by a Head and Neck Surgeon who uses an expert radiologist and cytologist in order to come to the correct diagnosis and offer the patient the appropriate management plan. Surgery should be undertaken for this type of pathology by someone who is regularly performing ‘parotidectomy’ as the facial nerve sits close by to any lump presenting just under the ear.
