There has been considerable controversy as to the relationship between Osteonecrosis of the Jaw and treatments used for the management of osteoporosis, especially the bisphosphonates. Recently clinical guidance on the topic based on a detailed literature review have been launched from the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme. The objectives behind this CPD event at 25 Harley Street are to enable dental practitioners to hear some of details of the guideline and to an enable a discussion on how dentists and osteoporosis specialists can work together to best serve patients with osteoporosis who are also requiring dental treatments. Particular reference will be made to a newer drugs which are proving to be successful in treatment of osteoporosis where the mode of action allows a window of opportunity every 6 months or so to carry out extractions and implant placement with minimal risk of the development of osteonecrosis.
