Q: I have been diagnosed with kidney cancer. Will I need to have a kidney removed?

Answer:

It will depend on the type and extent of the cancer, but modern treatment options are making it less necessary for surgeons to carry out ‘radical nephrectomies’ (removal of the whole kidney). Surgeons can now use ‘needlehole’ techniques which destroy tumours without removing the kidney or destroying it’s functions. ‘Tumour ablation’ is one such technique. See Kidney Cancer Tumour Ablation
