… Department of Health spends £10m on spin
It is all too evident recently that when politicians do not like the evidence or scientific fact they prefer to either ignore it or put their own spin on it. The NHS is naturally no exception and so although we are theoretically in an era of patient choice – what choice is there when the NHS decides what, and what not to fund on our behalf. It is therefore refreshing to know that the purpose of totalhealth is to facilitate direct communication between the recognised leading medical experts and patients.
It comes as no surprise to read today’s report from the Liberal Democrats:
The Department of Health increased the amount they spent on public relations firms by 50% last year, up to £10m, figures released by the Liberal Democrats have revealed. Commenting Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb said: “This is a staggering amount of money for ministers to be wasting on spin. While hardworking nurses and teachers are being short-changed with stingy pay deals, ministers are happily wasting eye-watering amounts trying to sell their policies. With the NHS facing an enormous strain on its finances in the next few years ministers must start putting patients before press releases.”
The first question that any patient should have for their doctor on receiving a diagnosis is – doctor, what are my options? In turn, the doctor then needs to be able to list all options along with the pros and cons. For example, if I have lower back pain – should that pain be managed medically or by surgery? Or, should I accept the NHS vaccine, or would I be better off looking at the alternative vaccines? totalhealth is here to assist with that process.
