Professor John Studd comments on what Adeola Olaitan had to say about men's role in cervical cancer.
Throat cancer is traditionally the result of heaving smoking or heavy drinking, however there is a greatly increased incidence of this malignancy in younger middle aged men due to a change of sexual habits and increased use of oral sex in the same way that HPV is involved in the etiology of cervical cancer, HPV is also involved in the causation of oral cancer. Studies have shown that if a man has had more than five oral sex partners there is a three fold increase in oral cancer.
The only point of a gynaecologist making this comment is that it is clearly ridiculous to limit HPV vaccination to young girls when part of the etiology of cervical cancer is the result of HPV transmitted through men and now we have the new association with oral cancer and HPV and it would seem logical to include young men in the HPV vaccination programme.
