How is obstructive coronary artery disease treated?

Leading Interventional cardiologist Dr David Brull explains: "The treatment of obstructive coronary artery disease involves a combination of medical treatment and “surgical techniques” designed to open blocked arteries and restore the blood supply to the heart. Key to this is angioplasty and stenting. This involves passing a wire through the blocked arteries together with a balloon that gently expands to remove the blockage. A stent, which is a small metal tube, is then inflated to high pressure providing an inner tube that holds the coronary artery open. The balloon is then deflated and removed leaving the stent in place and a restored blood supply to the heart."
