Headteacher reports on changing Addictions at School

Online pornography is having a major impact on the well-being of female students in particular and is the cause of a great deal of concern amongst teachers.  Headteacher, Mr Peter Norman says that interest in pornography is nothing new amongst boys, but what has really changed is that, "We are now seeing increasing numbers of girls who are distressed at their porn addiction". This is a new form of addiction and it is causing a great deal of consternation. It is like a drug.

Healthy loving relationships?

Mr Norman reports that there are increasing numbers of his female students who say that they want to stop using pornograpghy but seemingly cannot.  The ease of access to any material is clearly a contributory factor.  Worryingly, many boys and girls are emulating the behaviour they see online, with girls seeking to please boys by behaving like porn stars and boys believing that the behaviour they see online is normal in a relationship.

Schools making a stand

In his article, Addiction in School, The Head reports, "In my view the two areas of addiction causing most damage to our young people are alcohol and online pornography addiction.  Both addictions are fueled by massive commercial interests; schools are amongst a very few organisations in society which try to stand against these interests and support young people.  It will always be a losing battle but one which will also always be worth fighting".
