intravenous pyelogram

X-ray images of the kidneys taken after the injection of a dye into the veins, so that the urinary tract can be assessed more easily.

intravenous urogram

An x-ray that gives a clear image of the urinary tract.

intraventricular septum

The wall separating the two ventricles of the heart (its lower chambers).

intubation

Procedure involving passing a tube into part of the body. Examples include endotracheal intubation to maintain an airway, and gastric intubation to empty the stomach.

intussusception

A condition in which part of the intestine telescopes in on itself, usually resulting in intestinal obstruction.

Drugs that prevent the passage of ions (electrically charged atoms) across cell membranes.

ischaemic postconditioning

A therapy that aims to limit the extent of damage to the heart following a heart attack. The restoration of blood flow through the affected artery is briefly interrupted several times during angioplasty.

In vitro fertilisation. Fertilisation of the female reproductive cell (ovum) outside the body, before implantation into the uterus (womb).

IVU

Intravenous urogram, a special X-ray of the kidneys taken after injection of a dye. It is also called an IVP.

indolent

Causing little or no pain, slow to develop.

intractable pain

Pain that is not relieved by ordinary treatment.
